THE ARMENIAN ARTIST VAR SAHAKYAN PREFERS TO HAVE NO ARTISTIC STYLE, NOR TO HAVE ANY ATTACHMENT TO MEDIAS OR MATERIALS
CARMEN HUST | ARTICULATE #22 | JAN 2020 The Paris based Armenian artist Var Sahakyan (b. 1986), prefers to have no artistic style, nor to have any attachment to medias or materials. Whatever is at hand – with that he creates. If he has a camera, he takes photos, if he has an iPad, he does digital work, if he has space, he creates installations.
Sahakyan is particularly fond of installations, as the added dimension multiplies the channels with which one can introduce stimuli, enabling the creation of powerful experiences.
Most of his work emerges on their own, and from within, as Var Sahakyan, spontaneously experiments with the tools at hand. When he seldom is in urge of preparing a project and choosing a subject in advance, it is a response to a current situation, like climate change. |
Paying attention to everything inside and outside oneself, is according to Var Sahakyan the key element in creating a good composition. Training the brain to sense harmony and disharmony is his most powerful tool. Inspired by life with all its richness, Sahakyan emphasizes that creative processes thrive on inner freedom. Only when free of inhibitions, ambitions, worries and fears, multiple possibilities occur. To Sahakyan the easiest way to arrive at such state of mind, is through play.

“In play, things fall into unimaginable places.
And only because you were not there with all your ideas and knowledge and experience. If you would be there, only what you knew could emerge.” Another way for Var Sahakyan to cultivate the inner state of freedom, is through meditation, which he finds helpful. Therefore, he encourages his audience to cultivate themselves and play!
