Elin Engelsenan article written by Britta Lindstrøm
With this book, Elin Engelsen marks herself as one of the strong female contemporary artists of our time. Her works are perceived as poetic and almost spiritual, and are often described by reviewers as magical realism. She paints the world before we were carried away by flickering screens. The time when the world was still full of wonder, possibility and unsupervised inner life. And at the center of it all is her overriding fascination of nature - darkness and light. “Growing up in Bergen, Norway, and later in my adult life living in Denmark, I have always lived by the water. My happy memories and moments are linked to water, and it is still here that I feel most connected and united with the universe”.
Therefore it is especially the sea and the deep fjords that form the unknown element in Elin’s work; the uncharted, where people do not move with the indifference of everyday life. One moment peaceful, inspiring and playful and the next cruel, powerful and devasting. Through the entire history of mankind, the calm and grandeur of the sea has drawn. Infinity calms and heals, and these are exactly the feelings that Elins’s works embrace and convey.
